I have a 87 Cavalier, 2.0L, auto. This car is running horrible, intermittent rich condition, sometimes ECL, sometimes codes. Latest codes were 23 & 33. Where is the MAP ? What is M/C ?? Any help is appreciated.

The MAP is on the intake manifold back near the firewall. Should be right next to the transmission dipstick tube.

M/C = Master Cylinder

Does that vehicle have a carburator?

Further investigation: code 23 & 33 showed up, replaced MAP located on the firewall. Ran good for one trip, poorly 2nd trip out, failed miserably this morning. Back to Dwg board !

GM map sensors rarely fail. If you can't answer my question I can't help you.

With early computer controlled GM vehicles this means mixture/control. The carburator has either one or two solenoid controlled metering rods to achieve stoichiometric. This is why I asked the question he didn't feel needed answering.

Any vaccum leaks? fuel pressure and regulator correct? Is the injector leaking down? Is it equipped with an Egr?

Yeah,I thought it was a good question after I read it, it made me re-think. Being from a mainly Ford background I wasn't sure if GM went from carb to FI around the same time (1985-1986) as Ford did or not?

Odd that it would run good for awhile and then act up again throwing the same MAP code?

Possible fuel injector sticking or worn pitle area, or maybe a base engine problem? Could guess all day...

Further investigation: no apparent vaccum leaks, EGR seems to move like it should, looks like something is tell the injector to turn on too long (disconnect injector plug it will run fine for the few seconds, shuts off clean), very erratic-some good minutes, more bad times. installed a separate grd wire from computer to frame (no luck). When it runs bad it pours out black smoke. Have no reason to think its ignition related. TPS ?? Might try swapping out computers. Even as bad as it runs it doesn't produce a code except for 15 (low coolant temp???) & that sensor has been replaced.
Keep the tips coming Thanks
